L’area ex Viberti a Torino (1918-2019). Trasformazioni e attori tra industrializzazione e urbanistica contrattata

L’area ex Viberti a Torino, tra gli anni ’10 e gli anni ’60 del Novecento, fu sede di due importanti industrie metalmeccaniche italiane: la Soc. Automobili Ansaldo e la Soc. Officine Viberti. Tra gli anni ’60 e ’70, attraverso una convenzione con il Comune, l’area fu trasformata in zona residenziale e a servizi.  Rappresenta dunque un esempio di “urbanistica contrattata” degli anni ’60 e di quel procedere negoziale ritenuto da Luigi Mazza il vero protagonista delle trasformazioni urbane torinesi nel secondo Dopoguerra. Si tratta, però, di un intervento caratterizzato da un interessante rapporto tra potere pubblico e interessi privati, in cui gli attori coinvolti riuscirono a ottenere reciproci vantaggi e il cui esito non è etichettabile semplicemente come “speculazione privata”.

 

The former Viberti area, Turin (1918-2019). Transformation and its protagonists, between industrialization and negotiated urban planning

Between the 1910s and the 1960s the “former Viberti area” in Turin, was the location of two important automobile companies: Automobili Soc. Ansaldo and Officine Viberti (hence the name). Then, between the 1960s and the 1970s, it was transformed into a residential area, as the result of an agreement between the area’s owners and the local government. It therefore represents a typical example of that negotiated urban planning process that Luigi Mazza considered the true protagonist of Turin’s urban transformation in the post-World War II era. A process often resulting in mere real estate speculation. The transformation of the former Viberti area, however, was characterised by an interesting combination of public and private interests, benefiting all stakeholders.
